Description : Thirty-four years ago a very musically talented young man who grew up in our wonderful Sonoma Valley planted a seed. Through his nurturing and care, a choral group grew from that seed. It began as a number of people gathered from various church choirs and became a unique group of its own bringing entertainment and joy to both the singers and the audiences who heard it. Jim Griewe, with the support of other music lovers, had created The Sonoma Valley Chorale.

Over the years this non-auditioned community chorus grew in numbers. More that 650 people have sung in the SVC at one time or another. We have played to packed houses in the Veterans Building and made a number of special appearances out of town and even out of the country. Jim continued to be the guiding force of this group, his vision and musical expertise always leading us forward to accomplish many challenging works.

In addition to sharing the love of music, the members of the Chorale are friends and neighbors in this community. We have developed a feeling of family - sharing potluck dinners, hilarious talent shows, and support for each other in good times as well as difficult ones. Through all of these years, Jim has been the tie that binds us all together.

This 35th anniversary season is a celebration of the talent, dedication and love that has been given so freely by our Founding Director, James Griewe. His dream for his chorus to continue to thrive and bring the joy of music to Sonoma long into the future will be achieved because of the legacy he leaves us.

In this year of celebration, our very talented and capable Associate Conductor, Mr. David Irvine, will take on the title of Choral Conductor and he will become the new Music Director/Conductor beginning in the 2008/09 season. In this, his last year with the SVC, Jim will take on the title of Artistic Director, working with David, guiding, sharing his wisdom, preparing us for the future, and showing his love for this very special group he created, as he has done for the past 34 years.

We look back with gratitude and pride for all we have accomplished, and we look forward with excitement and anticipation to the wonderful new things to come for the SVC. Regardless of where our paths take us in the future, either as a group, or as individuals, we will always keep the enormous contribution that Jim has made to our musical community and the citizens of this valley in our hearts and minds. Jim will be with us each and every time The Sonoma Valley Chorale steps into the lights and begins to sing.

You won’t want to miss this very special anniversary season as we celebrate 35 years of music and we honor our founding director, Jim Griewe, in his final year.
